The Sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a non-perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family, also known as Compositae.
Native to Central America, it arrived in Europe at the beginning of the 1500s, but only in the 1700s did it become important as an oil plant.
A particularly fascinating plant.
The genus name Helianthus originates from Greek: helios = sun and anthos = flower, citing the characteristic of these plants, which always turn their leaves and young inflorescence towards the sun, rotating during the day to follow its path in the sky (positive heliotropism), a feature aimed at receiving the maximum amount of light to promote photosynthesis.
